I’m an aerospace engineer who led a National Academies study ordered by Congress about air traffic controller staffing. What air traffic controllers do? The Federal Aviation Administration’s fundamental guidance for the responsibility of air traffic controllers states: “The primary purpose of the air traffic control system is to prevent a collision involving aircraft.” Air traffic controllers are also charged with providing “a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic” and other services supporting safety, such as helping pilots avoid mountains and other hazardous terrain and hazardous weather, to the extent they can. Electric air taxi-makers worldwide have pitched themselves as clean alternatives to decongest cities, attracting investment from airline heavyweights such as Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) though they are still a long way away from commercial operations. Shin said the eVTOL taxi would be capable of flying at 120 mph (193 kph) and have capacity for a pilot and four passengers, targeting December 2024 for a test flight. Association of Flight Attendants-CWA President Sara Nelson praised the FAA action, calling the charter regulations a "loophole that undermines safety and security rules for commercial aviation." SkyWest (SKYW.O) has sought approval to conduct passenger operations through a separate charter operation and faces strong opposition from unions. Aviation unions and American Airlines (AAL.O) have criticized growing charter operations by air carrier JSX.

In a joint statement with Boeing and Wisk, Archer said it "has agreed to make Wisk its exclusive provider of autonomy technology for future variants of Archer’s aircraft." Boeing said it is making an investment in Archer "that will support the integration of Wisk’s autonomous technology in future variants of Archer’s aircraft." Archer counter sued Wisk in 2021 "for its false and malicious extra-judicial smear campaign" and Boeing in 2022. Archer will issue warrants to Wisk for up to 13.2 million shares as part of the settlement and autonomy agreement.

July 27 (Reuters) - Electric aviation and regional air travel company Surf Air Mobility (SRFM.N) shares slumped 75% below their reference price in a direct listing on Thursday. Unlike an initial public offering, in a direct listing shares are not sold in advance. The stock price at debut is determined by orders coming into the stock exchange. Surf Air Mobility had earlier this month pushed its listing date from July 11 to the week of July 24. The company had last year confidentially filed for a U.S. direct listing after terminating its $1.42 billion merger with a blank-check firm.
